Mannar is one of the important town in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka. Historically Mannar is popular for its natural Pearls that were harvested by deep sea divers from the Indian ocean. Due to the available Pearls, it was an important port for international business people in the ancient times. Now the area is popular for fishing Industry where large number of fishing community lives here. Meanwhile Historical Hindu Temple ThirukKetheeswaram is too located in this districy. In addition, this land is popular for the Madhu Church and its festivals. Millions of pilgrims used to visit here for the annual feast of the Madhu Church. Years back there was ferry service was operated from the Thalai Mannar Harbor to Rameswaram harbour in India. There are many historical buildings remains here. To see these buildings, lot of Holland and Portugal Tourists used to visit over here. Mannar is connected with road and train service from the commercial Capital Colombo. Most of the foreign people visiting Jaffna used to come over to visit Mannar as it is on the Jaffna Colombo route. Also people from Jaffna used to visit here for the Sivaraththi festival held at the Thiruketheswaram temple. For this they used to travel through Sangupitty Bridge road.

In the 1960's there was a passenger ferry service was operating between Mannar and India's Rameswaram port. In those years airline service was not popular with the mass. So they used this cheap ferry service to travel to India.

Hundreds of donkeys are wandering in this area.. During the colonial times these donkeys were domesticated and helped to transport goods to and from foreign merchant ships.
Now these donkeys are free and don'y any owners to look after them. So they are on the public places
