Mobile broadband Dongle.
Dongles are taking an important part in the young people's life in Sri Lanka. Whenever they meet and start to talk about internet then it will turn to the usage of their dongle. Still these people don't know which carrier's dongle is best. All of them are talking about the download speed, upload speed and the package and how much they spend on it. All the internet forums too are analyzing which dongle from which mobile phone service e provider. We think that this dongle talk will never end in Srilanka specially in Colombo as these young people are not sure about the dongle brand and the broadband provider.
Dongle which is also called as USB modem, internet stick, USB network adapter or USB mobile broadband stick is used to connect your laptop or computer to the internet through your mobile phone carrier provider's account. You can buy the dongle from your carrier or can get it from the open market as an unlocked one. The Dongle is much popular with the younger generation of people as it can be connected to the internet while they on the go. These dongles don't need installation CD, they come as plug and play.
In Sri Lanka all the mobile phone service providers are offering this broadband on the go using their mobile phone 3G technology at competitive bundle rate as like their mobile phone internet packages. Most of the dongles sold by the mobile phone carriers have at speeds of up to 7.2Mbps and download allowance of 3GB.
Good and the bad of the dongles.
If you take a high priced monthly broadband package from your operator, they will give you a free dongle.
USB dongles allow you to connect to the internet from any where you like rather than not limited to fixed line connection in your home or work place only.
Due to recent research in mobile broadband the physical size of the dongles are becoming small, their speeds had increased while their storage capacity too are increasing. Most of the dongles you find in the today's market has a cool 40 GB storage facility for you with the external SD memory card which can be inserted in the card slot and can be used as a card reader/data storage device
You don't need any extra power supply to operate the dongle as it used to get the necessary power supply from your computer.
Mobile broadband dongles can be connected to the USB port of your Laptop or Computer to be connected to the internet for normal or emergency broadband connectivity.
Bad Side of the Dongles.
Speed of the dongles is low like 7.2Mbps and don't match the fixed line broadband connection speed. This speed and the package is good for email, calendars and Twitter and not good for to use media streaming.
Coverage will not be the same in all places and some time you may be out of coverage to get connected to the internet.
Data packages are too small for you to drop your fixed line connection and go permanently for a 3G Technology broadband connection through your dongle.
If you want to use this dongle in overseas for broadband connectivity under your home package account, it will cost you lot of money like international roaming.
